What to do when you get into your own head for posing for asana

If you’ve ever asked someone to take pictures of you whilst practicing asanas, you might have noticed that sometimes the mind freezes and you run out of asanas to think of! It is a perfectly normal phenomenon that I have noticed throughout my photoshoots.

Here is some advice I have gathered to help you get out of your own head when that happens.

Think about what you teach

One of the reasons people get caught up in their head is because they worry too much about what looks good on camera. Under the right guidance, all the poses look good! Think about what you teach instead. Maybe ground yourself through a bit of silence, pranayama, or meditation!

Close your eyes and ask questions to your body

And get acquainted with your body in the moment. What does it want to do right now?
Do you feel like having your head upright or down? Do you feel tired or energised? What would you do if it were an actual yoga practice?

Think “movement” rather than “asana”

I also recommend this with your eyes closed. I used to do this when I was not inspired when doing a self practice: think outside of yoga. Sometimes we feel trapped by the asanas that we teach. Perhaps it is worth letting the body express itself.
