People of Mumbai
I have always admired street photographers. I always thought this was a skill I’d never possess and was content trying - all of my attempts in the past were always unsuccessful.
I believe to be a good photographer, but also acknowledge that my job is somewhat easy. All of my clients are beautiful and my process for personal branding photoshoots allows time to create connection which is an essential part of a successful portrait.
In street photography you have a split second to create a fleeting connection, and have your settings ready. The moment will come and go - if you miss it there is no second chance.
Being a natural introvert is also an obstacle as a street photographer, as it requires sometimes some talking, if not at least an acknowledgment of pictures being taken.
That being said Mumbai was so captivating that I couldn’t resist the temptation of trying street photography again - and I loved it. I thrived in it. And I surprised myself with capturing pictures I absolutely love.
I think part of it is the magic of India. Everything is beautiful and vibrant, people are stunning and friendly.
But I also think that I have finally evolved as a photographer. I have honed in on skills I didn’t have before. I believe I always had a good eye for composition and light, but it took me over 10 years to practice patience, confidence, and being present. Mindfulness is an essential part of street photography. There is only now, a “now” frozen in time to be looked at when it becomes the past.
