2 sides of Amsterdam

Last month I gifted myself and my boyfriend a short trip to Amsterdam.

Whilst he is an Amsterdam connoisseur, last time I travelled in this wonderful city was 9 years ago(!).

I hesitated at first bringing my camera as it is sometimes nice to live in the moment, but it is equally important for me to take photos to feed my creativity, removed from my professional life.

Throughout our stay I could see two sides of my interpretation of the city taking place - one with sharp lines and bright sun. And a softer one, hidden, vegetal.

What I found interesting is that I used to take only pictures of the first “side” - I used to be really into architecture photography, chasing harsh light to create lines. I was also really into black and white street photography and back then was only shooting in films.

The second side is me now, softened by years of yoga practice, self awareness and an expanded heart. I now crave nature and slowness. I am on the lookout for the beauty in everyday life. I find contentment in the mundane.

When I visited Amsterdam for the first time I was consumed by sadness - although found solace in the company of the two friends I went with.

This time it felt like the calm before the storm that will be the last quarter of the year. I’m shifting my business, running a retreat and planning a big travel. I am happy in my life and excited for what’s to come.

This trip made me feel grateful for the person I used to be, stumbling along so I could be here now.
